PRAMBANAN TEMPLE COMPLEX, YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA

Prambanan Temple Compounds is located ± 300 m north of Jogja-Solo road, 15 kilometers east of Yogyakarta city, exactly in the village of Karangasem, Bokoharjo Village, Prambanan Sub-District, Sleman District, Yogyakarta Special Province. This temple compounds is located astronomically at 07 ° 45 '07.90 south latitude and 110 ° 29' East Longitude 23:53 with a height of 154 m above sea level.










Prambanan Temple Compounds is the biggest Hindu enshrinement complex. Based on the Siwagrha inscriptions dated years 778 S, Prambanan Temple Compounds was founded in 856 AD by Rakai Kayuwangi of the Sanjaya Dynasty. Once abandoned by the society, it was found again in a state of collapse by C.A. Lons in 1733. Prambanan Temple was renovated by the Dutch government started at the beginning of 19th century. In 1918, P.J. Perquin was assigned to conduct restoration and the work was continued by De Haan until 1930. In 1930 -1942 van Romondt was appointed to replace De Haan, assisted by van Coolwijk, Soehamir, and Samingoen. The final stage of 1949 – 1953, the inauguration of full restoration (Siwa Temple) was done by President Ir.Soekarno.
Prambanan Temple Compounds has been enlisted as one of World Cultural Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1991, named Prambanan Temple Compounds. In addition to Prambanan Temple, Prambanan Temple Compounds has Buddhist temples in its complex, namely: Sewu Temple, Lumbung Temple, Bubrah Temple, and Asu (Gana) Temple. Being a world cultural heritage site has its implications for the responsibilities and obligations of Indonesia in an effort to formulate the protection and maintenance of such buildings in accordance with the conventions established by UNESCO. Those conventions require Indonesia, among others, to maintain the preservation of buildings from the dangers of war, aging physical damage, and natural disasters (earthquakes). Currently ongoing preservation is conducted in order to be utilized in a sustainable manner.

Prambanan Temple Complex consists of three concentric yards. Yard I is 110 m x 110 m, with 16 temples in it, consists of 3 main temples (Brahma Temple, Shiva Temple, Wisnu Temple), 3 medium temples (Garuda Temple, Nandi Temple, Angsa Temple); 2 Apit Temples; 4 Kelir Temples and 4 Patok Temples. All temples located in yard I have been successfully restored. Yard II is 222 m x 222 m, consists of 224 C. Ancillary, where two of them have been restored by the Dutch government. Meanwhile, yard III size is 390 m x 390 m. Each yard is surrounded by a fence and connected by the entrance in compass direction with the main entrance located on the east side.


THE LEGEND OF PRAMBANAN TEMPLE

Rara Jonggrang was a single daughter of King Boko, the ruler of the kingdom Medang Kamulan. Because of her beauty, a prince named Bondowoso intend to marry her. King Boko will hand over his daughter on condition Bondowoso can beat him in a battle. As a result, Bondowoso managed to kill King Boko.
At the heart Rara Jonggrang not the slightest hint of being Bondowoso's wife. However, he was too afraid to reject courtship. So he requires for Bondowoso to make a thousand temple complete with a statue in a single night.
Aided by an army of jinn, he barely able to finish  Rara Jonggrang requirements, but once the genie to escape before the job is over. Caused by milked sky in the eastern horizon that accompanied by replication crowing rooster, that only the delegates Rara Jonggrang which burn straw and hit pestle. Bondowoso feel has been tricked by Rara Jonggrang. So, he condemned Rara Jonggrang into statues of stone into a thousand to complete the whole statue.

ACTIVITY
From May to October every full moon, the story of Ramayana is usually staged in prophecy today at around 19:30 to 21:30. Dance more commonly known as the Ramayana ballet is staged in open areas in the western part of the temple.





TIPS & TRICKS
- Pay attention to your entourage, especially the children because the vast temple complex of Prambanan. When separated from the group, please contact the officer to make the announcement of the search.

- Please do not litter. Inside the temple complex there is not a lot of trash bin, therefore, try not to bring food and drinks that can damage the temple. Particularly carbonated beverages that can damage the strength of the temple stones.
