THE ECOTOURISM IN KAPUAS HULU, KALIMANTAN, INDONESIA


THE JOURNEY TO KAPUAS HULU


1.       Cross Borneo (west to east)
Cross Borneo is the heavy jungle trekking in the tropical rainforest of Borneo.  The journey will pass a hilly and mountainous area crossing the border of West to East Kalimantan.  Cross Borneo is the activity that follows a historical expedition route of a Dutch botanist, DR.  Anton W. Niewenhius in 1894.
The vegetation in the jungle is diverse and therefore you encounter different animals at different locations.  Borneo has a very wet climate, the hydrology in the expedition area is unique with hundreds of streams.  Two famous rivers on each side will offer different landscape and adventure experiences.

2.      Explore the heart of Borneo
In this impressive tour you can explore 2 National parks, Longhouse, jungle trekking, River Safari, Cultural & Historical activities are also included. 
Betung Kerihun National Park holds a rich biodiversity of plants, primates, birds, and fishes.  The vegetation is diverse and therefore you encounter different animals at different location. 
Danau Sentarum National Park is a wetland area that contains hundred of small island.  The park, registered as Ramsar site since 1994, is home to at least 250 species of freshwater fishes, mammals, reptiles, birds, and various type of flora.

3.      Historic Dayak Bukat Trail
The Bukat Trail is a historical route of the Dayak Bukat in the past Bukat people used this route to transport everything between the two villages.  This trail starts from the Kapuas river side to reach the Mendalam river.  Before  starting the expedition, you can explore the the simple and traditional livelihood of the Dayak bukat.
This is a kind of expedition which crosses Borneo tropical rain forest.  The journey mostly in wet trekking, sometimes we have to cross a river and climb river banks.  The vegetation in the jungle is diverse and therefore you encounter different animals at different locations.  Animal calls will be heard along expedition.  You have the great feeling of being is the real primary rain forest of the heart of Borneo.

4.      Muller Range Trekking
Muller is a range of mountains that is located at the border of West and East Kalimantan.  The name of “Muller” refers to a Dutch commander name who was killed by local people in the Bakang rapid-Bungan River.  This trekking is one of heavy jungle trekking in the tropical rainforest.  The journey will pass a hilly and mountainous area following a historical expedition route of a Dutch botanist, DR. Anton W. Niewenhius in 1894.

5.      Jungle Trekking
Sibau watershed is an area nearly Putussibau.
Nanga Potan, is the most remote rivers village in this area, and can be reached by wooden longboat in about 1,5 hours.
Potan village is a settlement of Dayak Bukat and kantuk.  The majority of communities are traditional famers and natural resources collectors.
The place of trekking is mostly mountainous and contains a broad range of vegetation types.  The vegetation is diverse and therefore you encounter different animals at different locations.

6.      Kapuas-Bungan Expedition
The Kapuas – Bungan expedition is an adventurous tour exploring th upper Kapuas and Bungan rivers.
 During the river expedition, the wooden longboat will cross rapids and narrow river in some points.
Abandoned or active traditional shifting cultivation, traditional gold mining and the longhouses will give impressive memories from the journey.
This trip also includes the exploration of the Longhouse, a historical cave and jungle trekking.

7.      Longhouse Tour
The Dayak ethnic is a biggest group in borneo Island.
In Kapuas Hulu – West Kalimantan, at least 19 tribes of Dayak with different language, tradition, and culture.
The longhouse (lamin/betang) is the artistic home of the majority of Dayak.
The longhouse communities are unique, tolerant, and offer great hospitality.
Some of oldest longhouses with big and long pillars are still maintained by the local community and accessible for visitors.
Previously, the Dayaks in Kalimantan hinterland build their homes in a row,-to-back, so that as one dwelling house up to tens of meters in length. In one building a long house (usually called Lamin or betang) consists of several chambers that contain several family members. That said, I reside in groups like this is done to avoid the threat of the enemy and attack from a variety of wild animals in the forest.

Now, after the tribes in the interior of Borneo are no longer isolated, many residents who built a single house. The existence of the long house as a cultural center began experiencing a shift. Even the many longhouses that eventually destroyed and torn down because unkempt.

In the hinterland of East Kalimantan, there are still some longhouse which is still a local cultural center. One of the long house frequented by foreign tourists is Lamin Eheng, Dayak longhouses found in the village Benuaq Pepas Eheng Kec. Barong Tongkok, Kab. Kutai.

Lamin Eheng was built around 1963. Originally consisting only of three chambers and now consists of 8 chambers. Lamin length reaches more than 75 meters by 12 meters wide and 2.5 meters high. The number of residents who live in this Lamin approximately 80 people.

8.     Wild Animal Watching
Wildlife observing in their original habitat is a rare and special experience.  The best places to watch the animals are close to the salt springs.  Animals like to come here because its water is saltier than other places.  Kapuas  Hulu district which is located in deep heart of Borneo has a high biodiversity of its flora and fauna.  Several nature oriented activities like animal- or bird- watching, or studying the flora of Kalimantan rainforest.
 Separi Sungai jut is one of big salt springs that offer excited adventure experience.  This salt spring area is wide and visited by various wild animals.  You can see how the wild animals act naturally in their original habitat.  To reach Separi Jut, we have to cruise up stream Sibaru river by longboat at first.  After arriving at Jut river estuary, we have to go up stream Jut river.  Sometime we have to walk and pull the longboat for about 7 hours though some rapids in side the deep jungle of the heart of Borneo.
